Vincent's Sunflowers
How could I possibly revel in the beauty of sunflowers without mentioning one of my very favorite painters — Vincent Van Gogh. No one painted sunflowers quite like he did. If you've ever been fortunate enough to stand in front of one of his sunflower works, you know how energetic, expressive and dimensional his paint strokes are up close. And that yellow!
In a letter to his brother Theo in 1889, Vincent wrote, "The sunflower is mine, in a way," referring to how completely this flower had become part of his artistic identity. He painted the series obsessively, chasing the way sunlight changed the color from bloom to bloom.
Here are a couple field trip links if you're interested in learning more about Vincent's sunflowers:

This gorgeous sunflower is a volunteer that grew in our driveway one summer. It just appeared, up through a crack in the pavement, right next to where we park the car, and it was magnificent.
To me, the center of a sunflower is one of nature's most extraordinary designs, and I can't stop looking at it. See all those little yellow dots? I learned some fascinating things about them.
They are true flowers: Each tiny yellow dot is called a disc floret. A disc floret is a complete, individual flower containing both male and female reproductive parts.
They are what create the seeds: Every single disc floret that gets pollinated matures into one sunflower seed.
They bloom in a pattern: The florets open from the outer edge of the circle moving toward the center over several days.
They follow math: The florets grow in a precise spiral layout based on the Fibonacci sequence to pack the maximum number of seeds into the space. Incredible, right?!
This sunflower became a real presence in our daily lives — for our postman, friends, and other visitors. We all gave it the consideration it deserved. We parked the car so the passenger door wouldn't hit it, walked around it to get to the garage, and took a wide arc when carrying groceries inside. A daily reminder to make space for surprises and for unexpected beautiful gifts from nature.
